It was 1952. The year the Korean war peaked and the year the world’s first passenger jet, the Havilland Comet, began its first scheduled commercial flight following the success of two years of test flights in UK. It was the earliest part of the decade that heralded the independence of several African nations. It was in 1952, that Nigerians were appointed Ministers by their colonial masters. So, for the first time in history, Nigerian politicians became directly associated with the formulation and implementation of government policies that touched on the wellbeing of the Nigerian people.
That was the year that I came to the world. What could have been the reason for my coming within that decade? She left before my faltering steps could fathom the environment in which life had given me. From my birthplace in Kafanchan, Kaduna State,Nigeria, to my home town in Ile-Ife, Osun State, Nigeria, life took me to many places with my dad and more than 20 siblings from his seven wives. Lack inundated the family.
It left my life, like that of my siblings, hanging on a slender forlorn hope. We ate rice two times in a year: Easter and Christmas. I had to leave home, Ile-Ife, for Kaduna to begin an apprenticeship in professional photography. In the snapshots of my story above are humbling and inspiring details that I will share in the course of this maiden narrative of my life.
My 70th year on earth comes with joy and tears. That turning point snowballed into a beautiful life that has changed me completely. If I was told, sixty years ago, that I would have the life I now have, I will not have imagined it. Woven as a weaver would to a basket, I have woven with words, the events of my life to date, as my own way of responding to the constant pressure of being told to tell my story.
I have learnt a lot in the last seven decades of being on earth. I have come to appreciate the inestimable value of my salvation in Christ as the compass upon which the bearing of life can be properly defined. From my beloved wife to children, relations, friends, allies, mentors, mentees, acquaintances, strangers and colleagues, I have come into fortunes, platforms and privileges, that several decades ago, looked impossible. I have colored the pages of this book with the lessons I have learnt of life.
I have a story to tell, let`s get to it.
